U-Turn sofa by Geir Sætveit for Martela
Made Popular May 15 2008
I really didn’t understand why the designer of this thing decided to call it the U-Turn Sofa since it neither offers a turn-about nor does it look like a u-turn symbol! I guess its just one of those marketing tricks to lure people into purchasing...

Sorry this reply comes sooo late, but I just now got in touch with these pages.
I work as Product Manager at Martela and it´s really nice to hear that you like Geir´s work.
I have two comments that, I hope, justifies the use of the name ”U-Turn” in this case:
#1 the best position to sit on the sofa is, that if you are sitting with someone else on the sofa, you turn around to each other and you raise your hand on top of the backrest. Then the curve of the backrest gives to your side excellent support and comfort.
#2 the height of the backrest is such that it makes it possible for the user sit/lean on it
So in those two cases you turn = U-Turn
This was the idea behind the products´s name and I hope that you find these comments justified!
Warm regards
Kari
