I think you may have Top Gun mixed up with some other movie. While it did feature Tom Cruise, he never flew a B-52 bomber. In fact, they were not flown at all in the movie.
The main jet flown was an F-14 Tomcat.
During training flights the pilots used A-4 Skyhawk.
The enemy aircraft were F-5E and F-5F Tiger II’s, also referred to as MiG-28’s.
